*Part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative by the Georgetown County Library,” the Georgetown County Library will partner with River Reader Kayaking, LLC of Murrells Inlet in order to provide a special educational program. Hastings Hensel will take a limited number of participants along for a free two-hour guided kayak tour along Black Mingo Creek in Georgetown County to the site of the Battle of Black Mingo. On September 29, 1780, General Francis Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox” for his evasive guerrilla warfare tactics, and his Revolutionary forces attacked a party of Loyalist troops left behind by British Colonel Banastre Tarleton, scattering them and driving them into the Black Mingo swamp. Hensel is owner and operator of River Reader Kayaking, a Master Naturalist, and a highly regarded author who will weave together fascinating details about the battle and about Francis Marion with a larger understanding of the human and natural histories of the creek. Kayaks, paddles, and PFDs (personal flotation devices) will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring water, a snack, sunscreen, and bug spray. The program is free and open to the public, but space is limited, so registration is required.
