*Part of “A Glorious Cause: South Carolina and the American Revolution: A Public History Initiative by the Georgetown County Library,” the Southern Georgetown Library welcomes Sallie Ann Robinson to describe historic Gullah foodways of the colonial era. She will also prepare and provide a limited number of free food samples to audience members. Robinson is a highly regarded cookbook author, celebrity chef, and cultural historian with expertise in Gullah Geechee cuisine. A native of Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, she was portrayed as the character Ethel in Pat Conroy’s memoir The Water Is Wide, and the two authors remained lifelong friends. Robinson’s numerous cookbooks typically commingle authentic Gullah Geechee recipes with sections of folklore, memoir, and Gullah Geechee language, and she has been featured in national and international media outlets, including BBC Travel, National Geographic, Southern Living, Bon Appetit, and Garden & Gun.
The project is made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL).
Free & open to all.
