The War Begins: The South Carolina Snow Campaign

November 22, 2025

| 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Performance | Kershaw County

Kershaw County’s SC250 Committee invites you to a creative and unique presentation on the Snow Campaign. For South Carolina, the Revolutionary War began exactly 250 years ago when Colonel Richard Richardson led several thousand South and North Carolina militiamen to put down Loyalist activities. The expedition ended with the Battle of the Great Cane Brake, followed by 18 or more inches of snow.

The program features a teenager telling his mother why he is leaving home to fight for freedom. The audience will hear from a patriot and loyalist as they defend their choices to support the rebellion or remain loyal to King George III. Historian Durant Ashmore will speak about the leaders, routes, and events of the Snow Campaign. Finally, you will experience the expedition through conversations between Colonel Richard Richardson and Joseph Kershaw. Afterwards, Historical Camden’s Colonial Village will come alive with demonstrations of colonial life.
