SUMMARY:Battle of Cedar Springs: How Spartanburg Got Its Name
DESCRIPTION:BATTLE OF CEDAR SPRINGS REENACTMENTJuly 18 • 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM140 Cedar Springs Place • Spartanburg\, SC 29302 \nJoin us as we honor one of Spartanburg County’s earliest Revolutionary War victories—and one of its bravest women. \nDuring the Revolution\, Patriot leader John Thomas was captured and confined at Ninety Six. His wife\, Jane Black Thomas\, followed him on a grueling sixty-mile journey. Along the way\, she overheard Loyalist women discussing a planned attack on the Patriot camp at Cedar Springs the next night. Without hesitation\, Mrs. Thomas mounted her horse and rode sixty miles back through dangerous territory to warn the men at Cedar Springs—where her son\, Colonel John Thomas\, Jr.\, was among the officers. \nBecause of her warning\, the Patriots were prepared. The victory at Cedar Springs\, though small\, became the first show of organized resistance to Major Patrick Ferguson in the Spartan District and gave new courage to the Whig cause. \nJane Thomas’s courage did not end there. When Loyalists later attempted to seize arms and ammunition stored at her home\, she and her son-in-law\, Josiah Culbertson\, defended the supplies from the upper floor of the house\, forcing the attackers to retreat. The preserved powder would later supply Patriot forces at Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock. \nExperience this powerful story\, brought to life through musket demonstrations\, living-history camps\, and battlefield interpretation. \nCome stand where resistance began—and where a woman’s 60-mile ride on horseback helped change the course of the Southern Campaign.

SUMMARY:Liberation Day at Fort Thicketty
DESCRIPTION:LIBERATION DAY AT THICKETTY FORT184 Goucher Creek Road • Gaffney\, SC 29340 \nStep back to the summer of 1780 and witness the dramatic moment when liberty returned to the Backcountry. \nJoin us at historic Fort Thicketty\, a pivotal site in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. Originally built by early Scotch-Irish settlers as protection against frontier threats\, the fort later became a Loyalist stronghold under Captain Patrick Moore. From behind its abatis and stockade\, Tory raiders struck Whig families throughout the Greater Grindal Shoals community. \nThen came the turning point. \nIn July 1780\, Patriot forces under Colonels Isaac Shelby\, Elijah Clarke\, and William Hampton surrounded the fort. Outnumbered and faced with the determined resolve of the Overmountain Men and Spartan Regiment militia\, the Loyalists surrendered without a shot. Ninety-three prisoners and hundreds of weapons were taken\, striking an early blow for independence in what would become Cherokee County. \nLiberation Day commemorates that bold stand for freedom. Experience living history demonstrations\, engaging interpretation\, and the powerful story of neighbor against neighbor in a Revolutionary War civil conflict that shaped our region. \nBring your family and rediscover the courage\, conviction\, and community spirit that helped turn the tide in the South Carolina Backcountry. \nFor further information\, call the Cherokee County Museum at 864-489-3988. \nCome stand where liberty prevailed!
