SUMMARY:Republic and Empire with Andrew O’Shaughnessy
DESCRIPTION:Join us in partnership with the South Carolina Historical Society as we approach our country’s 250th anniversary — we have explored many different angles of the Revolution – those specific to South Carolina\, further narrowed to the Lowcountry\, the thirteen colonies as a whole\, and much\, much more. But what of the Loyalists? Those who didn’t stand up to British rule and supported the empire and its endeavors? We are highly anticipating the return of celebrated author and renowned historian Andrew O’Shaughnessy for his latest\, another perspective on the Revolutionary era – perhaps a more expanded context from what might be more broadly familiar. Joining O’Shaughnessy in conversation will be South Carolina Historical Society CEO\, Elizabeth Chew.

SUMMARY:"Conversations of Freedom: The American Revolution at Middleton Place" Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Conversations of Freedom: The American Revolution at Middleton Place is our signature exhibition commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. \nMiddleton Place was the birthplace and home of Arthur Middleton\, one of 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Conversations of Freedom explores Middleton’s role in the American Revolution and the war’s impact on his family and the enslaved community at Middleton Place. \nPresented in the South Flanker House Museum\, the exhibition features exceptional 18th century textiles that belonged to Henry and Arthur Middleton along with a rare silk edition of the Declaration of Independence. Period artwork and furniture from the collection will provide historical context and lend authenticity to each gallery. \nConversations of Freedom opens this April and will be on view through December 2029. Make plans to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Conversations of Freedom Speaker Series: Partisan Warfare in the South Carolina Backcountry\, 1775-1783.
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Conversations of Freedom Speaker Series\, Dr. John Navin\, examines the brutal civil war that defined the South Carolina backcountry during the American Revolution. Attendees will discover how the region’s unique social tensions and frontier warfare shaped the struggle for independence\, offering a critical look at the “roots of the revolution” in South Carolina. \nDr. John J. Navin has been teaching American history at Coastal Carolina University since 1999.  He earned his Doctorate at Brandeis University and his Master’s degree at Boston College.   Dr. Navin has an unfortunate fascination with nefarious behavior and terrible events\, of which there are plenty.  In 2020\, his book\, The Grim Years: Settling South Carolina\, 1670-1720\, was published by USC Press.

Edmonds.\nWe will meet at Oconee History Museum to discuss the book and to talk about the history relating to the American Revolution. Readers are responsible for acquiring their own books. It will truly be a revolutionary time!\n\nDescription:When newlyweds Gilbert and Lana Martin settle in the Mohawk Valley in 1776\, they work tirelessly against the elements to build a new life. But even as they clear land and till soil to establish their farm\, the shots of the Revolutionary War become a rallying cry for both the loyalists and the patriots. Soon\, Gil and Lana see their neighbors choose sides against each other—as British and Iroquois forces storm the valley\, targeting anyone who supports the revolution.Originally published in 1936\, this classic novel was a bestseller for two years—second only to Gone with the Wind—and was adapted into a motion picture in 1939.
