SUMMARY:Revolutionary Reads: Drums Along The Mohawk
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating America’s 250th Birthday attending Revolutionary Reads!\n\nApril’s selection is “Drums Along The Mohawk” by Walter D. Edmonds.\nWe will meet at Oconee History Museum to discuss the book and to talk about the history relating to the American Revolution. Readers are responsible for acquiring their own books. It will truly be a revolutionary time!\n\nDescription:When newlyweds Gilbert and Lana Martin settle in the Mohawk Valley in 1776\, they work tirelessly against the elements to build a new life. But even as they clear land and till soil to establish their farm\, the shots of the Revolutionary War become a rallying cry for both the loyalists and the patriots. Soon\, Gil and Lana see their neighbors choose sides against each other—as British and Iroquois forces storm the valley\, targeting anyone who supports the revolution.Originally published in 1936\, this classic novel was a bestseller for two years—second only to Gone with the Wind—and was adapted into a motion picture in 1939. Now\, some three-quarters of a century later\, Drums Along the Mohawk stands as a brilliant account of the majesty of the New York frontier\, the timeless rhythms that shape a marriage\, and the battles of a revolution that would change the world.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: A Meteor Shining Brightly
DESCRIPTION:Said to be the ugliest man in Britain\, Lord Rawdon’s climb to Lieutenant Colonel during the American Revolution may have come as a surprise to many. This Irish lord impressed Sir Henry Clinton and General Cornwallis with his leadership and strategy skills. Lord Rawdon occupied the city of Camden for 11 months during the American Revolution and only fell back towards Charleston\, not because he had lost a battle\, but due to insufficient troops and supplies. 2023-2024 SC Teacher of the Year\, Mike Burgess once again returns to the Rev War Visitor Center to share Lord Rawdon’s story. Bring your lunch and get to know the British commander in charge during the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill. \n(You bring your lunch and we will provide the learning opportunity!) \nRSVP @ simplyrevolutionary.com

SUMMARY:Ready to Roll! A Historic Textiles Collection Special Event
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation\, The Charleston Museum is pleased to present its newest exhibition\, Ringleaders of Rebellion\, now on display in the Museum’s Historic Textiles Gallery. One of the many unique items currently on display in Ringleaders is a 14-foot-long silk sash\, likely worn by Miss Harriott Pinckney (1784-1824)\, Thomas Pinckney’s daughter\, on the occasion of President George Washington’s southern tour in 1791. Washington stopped at Harriott Pinckney Horry’s home\, Hampton Plantation\, for breakfast on the morning of May 1st\, 235 years ago. \nOn May 1st\, join Curator of Historic Textiles Virginia Theerman and Curatorial Assistant Kerry Toggweiler in the Historic Textiles Gallery for a chance to view this silk sash up close as they carefully unroll the delicate textile and reroll it for display. \nPainted with Washington’s miniature portrait in the center\, the sash has been on display showcasing the dove of peace that is depicted at one end\, with the presidential eagle at the other. The sash is nearly 14 feet long\, and must be displayed carefully to preserve the painted surface\, as well as the delicate silk. Conservation\, funded by donations raised by the Eliza Lucas Pinckney chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution\, has preserved this sash for the next 250 years of American history. \nIt is now time for the sash to be remounted to showcase the eagle for the second half of our Ringleaders of Rebellion exhibition. We hope you’ll join us in the gallery for this changeover\, and to learn more about this unique object of early American material culture! \nReservations preferred. Walk-ins accommodated as space allows on a first-come\, first-served basis. FREE for Members and FREE with admission. \nRegister online or call 843-722-2996 ext. 235.

SUMMARY:Requiem for a Warrior
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of SC250 Charleston\, The Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Rome School of Performing Arts is proud to present the South Carolina premiere of Timothy Dusenbury’s Requiem for a Warrior on May 3 at Summerall Chapel on the campus of The Citadel at 1 PM. \nRecognized as one of the most compelling Requiem settings composed by an American composer in recent years\, the SC250 Charleston performance of Requiem for a Warrior weaves Dusenbury’s powerful musical score with historical letters written by Charleston’s Revolutionary War patriots. Through this integration of music and primary source texts\, the performance offers audiences an immersive artistic experience that brings to life the extraordinary courage\, sacrifice\, and resilience that shaped Charleston’s earliest history and contributed to the founding of our nation. \nThis event serves not only as a commemorative tribute to the heroes of the Revolutionary era\, but also as a living act of remembrance—honoring those who serve today in defense of our communities and country. By presenting this work in Charleston\, where so much of the story unfolded\, the performance deepens public engagement with local history\, fosters civic reflection\, and strengthens connections between past and present through the transformative power of the performing arts.
