This Irish lord impressed Sir Henry Clinton and General Cornwallis with his leadership and strategy skills. Lord Rawdon occupied the city of Camden for 11 months during the American Revolution and only fell back towards Charleston\, not because he had lost a battle\, but due to insufficient troops and supplies. 2023-2024 SC Teacher of the Year\, Mike Burgess once again returns to the Rev War Visitor Center to share Lord Rawdon’s story. SUMMARY:Revolutionary War Patriotic Concert
DESCRIPTION:Members of the AAA Home School Band and the South Aiken Baptist Christian School Band will be presenting Patriotic music that tells us about events connected with the Revolutionary War. The concert will start with City Lamp Lighters lighting street candles\, Town Criers announcing the time; a city drummer. Our guest historian for this concert is Pete Peters who will share some of the history of Aiken with us. Music will include: “13 Original”\, Battle Hymn of the Republic\, Independance\, Deep River Suite\, and many others. A song written by Benjamin Franklin will be included. The concert is free and open to the public. Please bring your own lawn chair. In case of inclement weather\, the concert will be moved to South Aiken Baptist Church\, 980 Dougherty Road. SUMMARY:Ready to Roll! A Historic Textiles Collection Special Event
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation\, The Charleston Museum is pleased to present its newest exhibition\, Ringleaders of Rebellion\, now on display in the Museum’s Historic Textiles Gallery. One of the many unique items currently on display in Ringleaders is a 14-foot-long silk sash\, likely worn by Miss Harriott Pinckney (1784-1824)\, Thomas Pinckney’s daughter\, on the occasion of President George Washington’s southern tour in 1791. Washington stopped at Harriott Pinckney Horry’s home\, Hampton Plantation\, for breakfast on the morning of May 1st\, 235 years ago. \nOn May 1st\, join Curator of Historic Textiles Virginia Theerman and Curatorial Assistant Kerry Toggweiler in the Historic Textiles Gallery for a chance to view this silk sash up close as they carefully unroll the delicate textile and reroll it for display. \nPainted with Washington’s miniature portrait in the center\, the sash has been on display showcasing the dove of peace that is depicted at one end\, with the presidential eagle at the other. The sash is nearly 14 feet long\, and must be displayed carefully to preserve the painted surface\, as well as the delicate silk. Conservation\, funded by donations raised by the Eliza Lucas Pinckney chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution\, has preserved this sash for the next 250 years of American history. \nIt is now time for the sash to be remounted to showcase the eagle for the second half of our Ringleaders of Rebellion exhibition. We hope you’ll join us in the gallery for this changeover\, and to learn more about this unique object of early American material culture! \nReservations preferred. SUMMARY:Conversations of Freedom Speaker Series: Charleston during the British Occupation
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Conversations of Freedom Speaker Series\, historian Christina Butler reveals the complex daily realities of the British Occupation of Charleston (1780–1782) through groundbreaking research funded by the SC250 Commission. Moving beyond traditional military history\, the Christina draws on over 500 hours of archival study to explore how the occupation reshaped the lives of enslaved people\, women\, and Native Americans. \nChristina is the Provost\, Chair of General Education\, and a full professor at the American College of the Building Arts\, where she teaches courses in historic preservation and architectural history.  She is also an adjunct professor for Clemson’s Master of Historic Preservation program.  She taught for over a decade at College of Charleston\, including courses in Building Pathology\, Preservation Project Planning\, Researching Historic Properties\, Vernacular Architecture\, and Introduction to Historic Preservation.  Butler lectures at other venues on various aspects of architectural and local history.  Her areas of interest include urban history\, cultural landscapes\, history of public works and technology\, and historic building materials and methodology.  She researches and writes cultural resource management reports\, land use histories\, National Register nominations\, and assists clients with preservation permitting and understanding and caring for their historic properties.

She directed her plantation workforce to fortify the city’s defenses and later supported the Continental forces by supplying provisions from her plantation and townhouse. Hear the story of this prominent woman’s adventures under the British siege of Charleston\, including her escape upriver to join Patriot forces and her provision of the tools necessary to destroy the British headquarters in her occupied plantation home! By war’s end\, she emerged as one of South Carolina’s wealthiest individuals. \n About Presenter\n Margaret (Peggy) Pickett is an independent researcher\, author and living history presenter. In addition to developing and presenting history programs for schools\, she has researched and created programs in which she portrays women of the past. Her current portrayals include Eliza Lucas Pinckney\, Dorothy Sinkler Richardson and Rebecca Motte. She is the co-author of The European Struggle to Settle North America 1521 – 1608 and the author of Eliza Lucas Pinckney Colonial Plantation Manager and Mother of American Patriots\, 1722 – 1793. DESCRIPTION:Due to repeated no shows; in 2026\, families who sign up and repeatedly no-show will be removed from the list in order to have a more accurate picture of expected attendance.\nOnce a month\, the Rev War Center offers a free homeschool day where small school groups can come together and experience one of the educational programs offered by the Center. A minimum of ten students will be needed to host these educational programs\, if the minimum is not met then parents will be notified a week prior that the program will be canceled. Programs are geared toward students in 3rd grade through high school. Younger students are welcome to attend and follow along\, but will need the assistance of their guardian throughout the program. Smalls will explore the social and cultural life of Gullah people in the South Carolina Lowcountry during the Revolution. Smalls\, a Gullah Geechee native of Saint Helena Island\, South Carolina\, is CEO of Smalls Cultural Resources\, where she champions Gullah Geechee committees and their global connections to the African diaspora. Her previous professional experiences and honors include serving as a federal Commissioner on the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission as well as Executive Director of the Gullah Geechee National Heritage Area\, and receiving the 2024 Governor’s Award in Humanities.\nThe project is made possible by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the South Carolina State Library (SCSL).\nFree & open to all.
