AR – 1775-1783. This present day community of Roman Catholic monks sits on 3,000 acres. The first record of the “Mepkin” name was a 1681 grant to the sons of Sir John Coleton, one of the Lords Proprietary of South Carolina. In 1762, one of his descendants sold the land to Henry Laurens. The home Laurens built there became known as Mepkin Plantation. Laurens was a slave trader, rice planter and Charleston merchant. The home no longer exists. The monastery grounds are open to the public and include a graveyard containing Henry Laurens’ ashes as well as his son, John Laurens’, grave.
