Battle of Stono Ferry
On June 20th, 1779, Patriot Maj. Gen. Benjamin Lincoln advanced with 1,200 men to assault a British garrison. The intense battle saw the British left side retreat, prompting Loyalist Lt. Col. John Maitland to reposition his troops and rally the Hessians. As fighting continued, Brig. Gen. Augustine Prevost’s reinforcements arrived, prompting Lincoln to order a retreat. The withdrawal was covered by mounted units and the Virginia militia, with Brig. Gen. Casimir Pulaski’s cavalry repelling the British pursuit. The British reported 26 killed, 93 wounded and 1 missing, while Patriot losses were 30 killed, 116 wounded and 155 missing. The battle provided the British with valuable intelligence on Charleston’s defenses, aiding their successful siege the following year.
