Jim Capers
A Patriot Drum Major who played a vital role in the American Revolution, Jim Capers, was born on September 23, 1742, in South Carolina. He was a free African American who served as a Drum Major in the 4th South Carolina Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Despite sustaining severe injuries in key battles like Eutaw Springs, Capers remained dedicated to his role until his discharge in 1782. After the war, he moved to Alabama with his wife Milley and their six children. Although he applied for a pension in 1849, Capers passed away in 1853 before receiving it. His legacy was honored in 2015 when the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution marked his grave.
