Bring the family out for some history and fun as we commemorate the raising of the first South Carolina Flag. This flag, designed by Gen. William Moultrie, was hoisted at Ft. Johnson in September 1775 in the leadup to Revolution. Moultrie later stated, “I had a large blue flag made with a crescent in the dexter corner, to be in uniform with the troops: This was the first American flag which was displayed in South Carolina.” Beginning at 10:00am on Sept. 13th, we’ll hear remarks by historians, watch the flag raising, enjoy musket and cannon volleys, and learn more about the indigo used as the flag’s background color. Indigo was a major staple crop grown in South Carolina due to the experience and labor of the enslaved workforce. Dye your own blue cloth and learn more about SC250 Charleston. We may have some food trucks or you can pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on-site.
