Learn about Maroon communities in South Carolina with Robert E. Scarlett, Museum Historian and Board Member of Summerville Museum and Research Center. He will present a lecture on Maroons, who formed wilderness communities through marronage—escaping to live independently. These groups settled in Dorchester, Colleton, and Jasper County, surviving by trading with settlers or raiding plantations for supplies.
In addition, a formal ceremony will be held to mark the return of a DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) brooch to the family of Ethel “Mimi” Bennett Gullans. The brooch was recovered during an archaeological study conducted in October 2024 by the LAMAR Institute of Savannah, GA. Jim Closson, President of the Thomas Heyward, Jr chapter of The Sons of the American Revolution, will recount the process of discovery and describe the dedicated efforts undertaken to identify Mimi’s heirs and facilitate the brooch’s restoration to her family.
