County Organizations Tapped to Honor 250th Anniversary of Revolutionary War Era in South Carolina

If asked where the American Revolution took place, most Americans would mention Massachusetts, New York or Pennsylvania, not realizing that South Carolina had the second most confirmed battles and skirmishes during the American Revolution.

The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) was founded to educate South Carolinians and visitors about the state’s contributions to our nation’s independence in conjunction with the 250th-anniversary milestones of the Revolutionary-era.

With over 400 battles and skirmishes taking place across every corner of South Carolina, SC250 is building a network of county committees to honor American Revolution history on the local level. These committees serve as the hub for Revolutionary-era 250th anniversary activities within each county. Committees are tasked with rallying historic groups in each county, amplifying the stories of lesser-known Revolutionary heroes such as Native Americans, African Americans, women and children and reaching out to those in rural areas.

Currently, 41 of South Carolina’s 46 counties have confirmed County 250 committees with an approved resolution in place. SC250 has made contacts in all counties, and several of the unconfirmed counties are in the process of finalizing their committees. As these groups continue to solidify, their collective goal is to broaden their reach and share their local Revolutionary-era stories with their communities.

Each County 250 committee is eligible to apply for SC250 grants to launch their committee and fund activities and projects geared toward educational programming, historic preservation and driving tourism and economic growth. SC250 equips each county committee with resources to support communications, branding and other key endeavors.
