Lee County

Lee County’s Revolutionary War legacy centers on the 1781 skirmish at Ratcliff’s Bridge, where General Thomas Sumter, facing British pursuit, ordered the bridge burned and withdrew into the surrounding swamp to preserve his force. Although Lee County was created later, the area was part of the Pee Dee region, where Francis Marion’s militia frequently operated. These actions highlight the combination of strategic retreats and guerrilla tactics that defined the Southern Campaign and shaped the Revolutionary heritage of what is now Lee County.
