Marlboro County, then part of the Pee Dee and Cheraw District, witnessed several Revolutionary War skirmishes, including Hunt’s Bluff, Cashua Ferry, and Brown’s Mill. At Hunt’s Bluff in July 1780, Patriots used log “Quaker cannons” to bluff a British convoy into surrender. The assassination of Colonel Abel Kolb marked the war’s brutality in the region. On May 3, 1781, Pegues Place hosted the only formal prisoner exchange cartel of the Revolution.
