SIGNIFICANCE – On May 9, 1775 – Isaac Marion, brother of Francis Marion, living at the Boundary House, on the state line just above the present-day VMHG, received word of the Battle of Lexington via a courier on horseback, and forwarded the message (aka “Lexington Alarm”) on to Charleston. This event marked the first arrival of this news in the state of South Carolina.

Starting at 11:00 a.m., there will be a brief talk in the C.B. Berry Center about the significance of this event in South Carolina’s history, with details given about the historic ride. Following the presentation, we will move outside beside the original roadbed of the old, colonial “Broad Road” and welcome a lone courier on horseback, bringing with him news of the Battle of Lexington, MA., just as was done 250 years ago to the day.

DIRECTIONS – The event will be held at the VMHG, in the C.B. Berry Center. The VMHG is located at 2250 SC-179, Little River, SC 29566. This is just past the S.C. Welcome Center and right at the turn to Calabash, NC. It is located on the east side of US Hwy. 17.

Sponsored by the “Horry 250 Committee” & the Horry County Historical Society.
