Berkeley County

Presenter: Eleanor Cooper Brown’s funded research.
This research was proposed to find definitive documentation that would identify historical information about enslaved persons of African descent in Berkeley County, or their stories. The research focused on Northampton and Wantoot plantations, which were the country seats of General William Moultrie and Daniel Ravenel. Wantoot was also the site of a British holdup after the Battle of Eutaw Springs. There was also a component to research descendant family names or families who may still exist from these locations. Further focus included identifying roles the enslaved were conscripted to or covertly used by the militia, continental army, or the British; the process included identifying their plight for freedom, or any other stories related to the Revolutionary era activities engaged at these plantations that might be uncovered.
