The Newberry Museum Special Presentation: “The Important Role of Women in the American Revolution” presented by Mille Westermeyer, Jasper Chapter, DAR. The story of the American Revolution cannot be properly understood without including the important contributions and experiences of women in gaining our independence. Presentation covers: Influential Writers, Thinkers, and Poets (Mercy Otis Warren, Abigail Adams, Phyllis Wheatley; On the Home Front: Maintaining the Family, taking over operations of the farm & businesses; Supplying the Army; the Daughters of Liberty (Lead for Boycott of English Goods) and the Homespun Movement; and defending the Homestead (Nancy Morgan Hart)
Also presented is the critical role of women who traveled with the Armies: Camp Followers, washing and mending clothes, foraging for and preparation of Food, and nursing the sick & wounded.
