Norm Rickeman will be the speaker for the next Lee County 250 meeting, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 6 PM at the City County Complex located at 140 North Main Street in Bishopville, SC. A lifetime history nut, Norm began volunteering as a docent for the National Park Service at Ft Moultrie when he moved to Sullivan’s Island from Minnesota. He was familiar with Francis Marion and Osceola but he had never heard of William Moultrie or the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28th, 1776.

Norm’s engaging talk not only tells of the importance of this battle in the Revolutionary War, but he weaves the stories of how our state flag came to be, Francis Marion’s role in building the fort, and the importance men of color were to this endeavor.

School age children learning South Carolina history and their teachers will certainly enjoy this informative talk. If you are planning a trip to Charleston in the near future, Norm will have you standing in line at Fort Moultrie for a ticket to tour!
He will also tell us about the upcoming plans for the celebration of Carolina Day on June 28th, and for the 250th anniversary in 2026.

Lee County 250 is very excited Norm is making a special trip to Bishopville to share our state’s history. All proceeds from his book sales go to the Friends of Charlestons National Parks.
