Honor a Patriot. Preserve a Legacy.

South Carolina’s Revolutionary history belongs to all of us, and the South Carolina American Revolution Trust invites you to be part of preserving it. The Trust exists to protect the artifacts, stories, and collections that reveal our state’s essential role in securing American independence.

Your support allows the Trust to continue the important work started by the South Carolina Sestercentennial Commission (SC250). Because of this ongoing effort, the collections, research, and materials that shape our understanding of the Southern Campaign will be safeguarded, expanded, and shared with future generations.

The Trust also maintains a physical home in the historic Robert Mills Courthouse in Camden. This space is open to the public and reflects a core value championed by its founders, that history must not remain hidden or inaccessible in a basement. It must be available, free for all to view, study, and use.

When you invest in the Trust, you help ensure that the people and pivotal moments that shaped our nation will never be forgotten.

Why Your Support Matters

South Carolina played a decisive role in winning American independence. These were not distant events. They were moments of courage lived out by real people whose choices shaped the future of the United States. The Trust preserves, protects, and promotes those stories, artifacts, and places, building on the foundation laid by SC250 so that this history endures.

One of the clearest examples of this mission began with the late Charles Baxley. As the first Chairman of SC250, Charles recognized how quickly history can disappear if no one steps forward to save it. He spent decades studying the Southern Campaign, collecting books, maps, and research materials with extraordinary care. He shared what he learned through battlefield tours and through his publication Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution.

He also launched the Markers Project with his friend Bill Segars to locate, document, and restore South Carolina’s Revolutionary War markers. What began as an effort to identify 185 existing markers has grown into a statewide initiative, documenting and restoring nearly four hundred signs, sites, and monuments. Thanks to this ongoing work, supported by volunteers and the Trust, visitors can now explore these sites through the SC250 Marker Map.

Before his passing in 2024, Charles chose to donate his extensive library to the Trust. His gift was an act of stewardship and conviction. He believed South Carolina’s Revolutionary story must be preserved for future generations. His collection, the first major gift to the Trust, stands as a powerful reminder of what can happen when one person’s passion is protected and shared.

Your support allows the Trust to carry forward the legacy he helped build and ensures that the work of dedicated collectors, historians, and families is never lost.

How Your Support Makes a Difference

Your support makes a lasting difference. It helps preserve decades of research and the collections lovingly built by both amateur and professional historians. It protects priceless artifacts, records, and historic sites that reveal the truth of the American Revolution. It promotes South Carolina’s story by sharing it with the world and elevating the vital role our state played in the global pursuit of liberty. Most importantly, it perpetuates this history, ensuring that these stories live on so future generations may learn, explore, and understand.

Honor a Patriot

Many people feel a personal connection to the American Revolution. Perhaps your family tree includes a Patriot who fought for liberty. Perhaps you have been shaped by the ideals of freedom, courage, or service. Supporting the Trust in honor of a Patriot becomes both a tribute to their bravery and an investment in preserving South Carolina’s Revolutionary legacy.

Your Gift Is More Than Monetary

The Trust protects not only artifacts but the stories behind them. Charles Baxley’s example shows how a lifetime of passion can become a gift to the entire state. Many supporters tell us that the most meaningful contribution they can make is to preserve their own collection so it can educate and inspire people long after they are gone.

If you have books, letters, documents, maps, art, or artifacts related to the Revolutionary era in South Carolina, your collection may become a lasting part of the Trust. The Trust secures physical and digital materials, honors each donor’s legacy, and adds collections to the online museum so people can learn from them.

There are many ways to support this work through a financial contribution, a donation of historical materials, beginning a conversation about your collection, or sharing our mission with others who care deeply about history. Every type of gift strengthens the Trust and helps preserve South Carolina’s role in the story of America.
