Andrew Hamilton

An Abbeville County citizen who made his mark during the revolution was Andrew Hamilton. Although his family originally hailed from Ireland, Hamilton joined the fight for independence early on by volunteering for service in 1775, remaining enlisted for the duration of the war. He fought at the Battle of Kettle Creek, an important Patriot victory, and at the Siege of Ninety-Six, as well as numerous other battles and skirmishes, at one point even becoming a prisoner of war. He was eventually promoted to Major and continued to serve his country after the war by joining the Legislature.
