Volume III of The Francis Marion Papers Released — Completing a Landmark Project

The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commissions (SC250), in collaboration with the Battleground Preservation Trust, has released Volume III of The Francis Marion Papers, completing a three-volume digital collection of General Francis Marion’s surviving correspondence.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, SC250 remains committed to preserving and honoring South Carolina’s pivotal role in securing that independence. Among the most significant figures in this history is General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox,” whose unconventional tactics and resilient leadership were instrumental to the Patriot cause.

With Volume III, that story is now fully assembled.

This final volume presents transcripts of approximately 313 documents from 1782 through 1795, including the final years of Marion’s life. It contains 1,326 footnotes, carefully annotated and linked to biographies and contextual materials to make the collection accessible to scholars, students, and the public alike. Together with Volumes I and II, which collectively include more than 600 letters to and from Marion, the project represents the most comprehensive publication of his papers ever assembled.

SC250 CEO Molly Fortune noted that this collection serves as an invaluable resource, offering rare insight into Marion’s life, strategies, and legacy. More broadly, it connects us to the larger narrative of resilience, innovation, and determination that defined the American fight for freedom. By preserving and making these documents publicly accessible, SC250 reaffirms its commitment to historical education, heritage tourism, and honoring the sacrifices and triumphs of South Carolina’s patriots.

What makes this project especially meaningful is how it began.

More than twenty years ago, researcher David Neilan set out on what he later described as a “long and winding road.” What started with a used bookstore discovery and a personal curiosity about the “Swamp Fox” grew into a two-decade effort to locate, transcribe, and annotate Marion’s correspondence. From major research libraries to obscure archives, Neilan conducted extensive detective work, assembling hundreds of documents and building a detailed chronology of Marion’s movements and service.

The project was revived under SC250’s leadership in 2022, championed by the late Charles Baxley and carried forward by editors Rick Wise and Ben Rubin. Following Baxley’s death in 2024, the Commission mobilized to ensure the work continued.

Today, that vision has come to fruition.

The Francis Marion Papers stand as a cornerstone achievement of SC250’s commemorative efforts, grounding the legend of the “Swamp Fox” in primary sources and allowing readers to encounter the real Francis Marion: disciplined officer, adaptive guerrilla leader, steadfast patriot, and complex human being.

All three volumes are available online at https://southcarolina250.com/publications/, with additional interpretive materials and resources continuing to be added.

As we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, this completed collection ensures that South Carolina’s Revolutionary story is not only remembered, but preserved, studied, and shared for generations to come.
