Barnwell County

Barnwell County, named in honor of Revolutionary War Brigadier General John Barnwell, was the scene of significant conflict during the struggle for independence. Though not yet formally established as a county, the region bore witness to engagements such as the Battle of Slaughter Field and the use of God’s Acre Healing Springs, where soldiers and Native Americans alike sought restorative waters. Throughout the war, Patriot forces in the area faced persistent clashes and strong Loyalist resistance, leaving a lasting imprint on Barnwell’s Revolutionary heritage.
