Chesterfield County

Chesterfield County’s position near the Pee Dee River gave it strategic importance during the Revolutionary War. In 1781, British forces invaded the region, leaving a trail of destruction through burning and looting. Skirmishes and partisan campaigns, including operations led by Francis Marion, fueled persistent local resistance even as residents endured deep hardship and civil strife. Today, historic sites across the county preserve and interpret this turbulent Revolutionary legacy.
