Kershaw County was the scene of numerous events during the American Revolution. Not only was the city of Camden occupied by the British for almost a year, many other communities in Kershaw County saw their homes become the scenes of battles and skirmishes between patriot and loyalist forces. One of the worst defeats of the American Revolution, the Battle of Camden, took place in Kershaw County and just a year later the British defeated another American army at the Battle of Hobkirk’s Hill.
