Newberry County

Newberry County, created from the Ninety Six District in 1785, was the site of several Revolutionary War engagements. Battles and skirmishes occurred at Williams’ Plantation, Mud Lick, and Bush River, while British commander Lord Rawdon camped at Glenn’s Mills near the Enoree River. Though its role was more limited than other regions of South Carolina, Newberry residents served on both sides of the conflict, reflecting the divided loyalties and partisan warfare of the backcountry.
