Edgefield County

Edgefield County’s Revolutionary War story was marked less by large battles than by fierce civil strife, as clashes between Patriots and Loyalists intensified divisions within the community. Then part of the vast Old Ninety Six District, the region was shaped by nearby engagements at Musgrove Mill and Ninety Six, along with local skirmishes such as Horner’s Creek. In 1785, following independence, the state legislature divided Ninety Six into smaller counties, including Edgefield, establishing local governance for the first time.
