Dr. Bernard Powers, director of the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston and professor emeritus of history at the College of Charleston, and Rebecca Moffatt, Instructor of historic preservation at the College of Charleston and a native of Atlantic Canada, will explore the hidden stories of formerly enslaved South Carolinians who made the journey northward to Atlantic Canada and, in some instances, eventually continued on to Africa. This discussion will uncover the physical pathways taken by those who sought freedom, the cultural legacies which they left behind, and how we today can trace their stories from Carolina to Canada and beyond.
