Blue, Red, & Black: African Americans and the Revolutionary War

What role did black people play in the quest for liberty? This presentation of period artwork, illustrations, and historical documentation addresses the little-known, yet significant, impact African Americans made in US history during the period of 1763-1783.

About the presenter:
Donald West was an instructor and coordinator in the Department of History, Humanities, and Languages at Trident Technical College. He has taught US history, African history, African American history, and Lowcountry Black History and Culture. He is a travel enthusiast as well as a member of several professional organizations related to his academic and educational interest.

He has used his love of history to facilitate learning through travel, leading groups on local history tours in Charleston, as well as additional educational trips in other places in South Carolina, the Southeast, and Washington D.C. In 1998, West was awarded the a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship to travel and study in the Republic of Cameroon. He has also traveled to Ghana, Senegal, and The Gambia, where he has visited important historic sites connected to the Atlantic Slave Trade. In 2008 he traveled as the project director of a Fulbright-Hays with 12 other educators to Guinea and Sierra Leone. West has also helped to write two Fulbright grants, bringing African scholars to Trident Technical College to teach and lecture on African history and Black Literature.

Donald West is graduate of the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore and the University of Cincinnati.
