Florence County

Partisan fighting was prevalent in Florence County, with neighbors and family members at odds. General Francis Marion took command of the Williamsburgh Militia in Johnsonville, and his men used the area swampland as his hideout. Marion was given the nickname “The Swamp Fox.”

The old stagecoach road from Georgetown through Florence to Cheraw, SC, was a hotbed of resistance. Patriot Major James Wemyss set fire to more than 100 houses along this route in his campaign of terror.
