Type: Monument
This 1913 monument honors South Carolina’s three partisan generals of the American Revolution, all of who played a major part in the quest for independence, Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter, and Andrew Pickens.
The 27-foot tall red granite Doric column is made of red granite. A bronze statue of Nike, the Roman goddess of victory, sits atop the column. In her hands is a crown of glory and a palm of victory. Bronze relief portraits of the three generals are on the polished marble base.
This monument was the result of efforts by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and descendants of the generals. It was commissioned and funded in part by the South Carolina General Assembly. It was designed by Frederic Wellington Ruckstall, one of the most noted sculptors of his time, whose works can be found in some of the world’s leading art museums. He also created the monuments to Wade Hampton III and the Women of the Confederacy on the State House grounds.
