Deep within the development of Palmetto Bluff and nestled behind an ivy-clad fence is the Screven-Hipp Cemetery. This cemetery was established in the late eighteenth century on Montpelier, the first plantation established on May River Neck. Several of the owners of Montpelier are buried in the cemetery, including Revolutionary War Soldier John Screven and Revolutionary War Patriots Elizabeth Pendarvis Screven and George Hipp. Likely, Josiah and Richard Pendarvis are also buried there; however, no stones mark their graves.
