Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

County: Richland    Type: Landmark

Trinity’s congregation was organized in 1812 and for the first two year held services in the old State House. In 1814 they moved to a frame building until they built the current church, a replica of Yorkminister Cathedral in York, England, in 1846.

The cemetery is one of the most historic in South Carolina. Two veterans of the American Revolution are buried here, Colonels Wade Hampton I and Peter Horry. Horry was the second in command and close personal friend of Gen Francis Marion, the legendary “Swamp Fox” of the American revolution. Horry County in S.C. is named after the colonel.

In addition the cemetery contains the remains of six governors, three Confederate generals, three Congressmen, two U.S. Senators and a U.S. Secretary of State. Also buried here is Henry Timord, often called the “Poet Laureate of the Confederacy,” and Thomas Cooper second president of South Carolina College, the modern University of South Carolina
