It was at Purrysburg in Jasper County where General Prevost first began his march into South Carolina on the way to the siege of Charleston in April/May of 1779. The Battle of Coosawhatchie was also an important skirmish in delaying Prevost’s troops in arriving at Charlestown. Finally, it is the birthplace and the burial site of Thomas Heyward, Jr. one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
