Oconee County

During the Revolutionary War, present-day Oconee County was Cherokee homeland and a frontier of conflict. The Cherokee allied with the British, leading to the destruction of their “Lower Towns” in campaigns led by Andrew Williamson and Andrew Pickens. A pivotal event was the Battle of Ring Fight in August 1776 near Tamassee, where Pickens’s militia repelled a Cherokee ambush. After the war, settlers moved into the area, establishing outposts like Oconee Station and shaping the county’s postwar frontier identity.
