On September 8, 1781, the American and British armies met at Eutaw Springs, South Carolina, in the last major open-field battle of the Revolutionary War. After about four hours of intense fighting in scorching heat, the Americans withdrew, leaving the British holding the field. The British army, however, had suffered so many casualties that it withdrew toward Charleston on September 9. Both sides insisted that they had won this important battle, which determined the future course of the war in South Carolina. In addition to information about the battle, Jim includes a driving tour.
