Tony Small, of South Carolina, saved wounded British officer Lord Edward Fitzgerald after the Battle of Eutaw Springs in 1781. Their long friendship took them across the British Empire and into Irish revolutionary politics. Tony’s lived example of liberty helped inspire Fitzgerald’s anti-British rebellion. Tony later died impoverished in London.
