During the Revolution, Purrysburg served as the first headquarters of the American army under Major General Benjamin Lincoln. Major General Robert Howe fled with his remaining forces to Purrysburg after Georgia was taken by the British.

Completed in 1713, the Powder Magazine is South Carolina’s oldest public building and now hosts a colonial military history museum. The building was used as an arsenal during the American Revolution to defend the city.
