Meet Antigua

Antigua was an enslaved African American man who risked his life by acting as a spy for the duration of the American Revolutionary War. Antigua was said to have been hired by the former governor of South Carolina, John Rutledge, to gather information on the movements and tactics of the British. He would do this by breaking into British encampments and steal valuable intelligence on the enemy’s next moves. After the war, the South Carolina General Assembly praised Antigua for his work, and for his reward, Rutledge freed Antigua’s wife Hagar and their child from slavery.
