Sumter County

Sumter County is named for General Thomas Sumter, the “Fighting Gamecock,” whose relentless guerrilla campaigns challenged British forces across South Carolina. After the British burned his home in 1780, Sumter rallied militia that fought key battles at Rocky Mount, Hanging Rock, Fishdam Ford, and Blackstock’s Plantation, where he was severely wounded. His tenacity earned him lasting fame and bolstered Patriot morale. His leadership weakened British control and secured his legacy in South Carolina’s fight for independence. Today, his Stateburg home site, gravesite, and local museums preserve his enduring Revolutionary legacy.
