Williamsburg County

After Charleston’s fall in 1780, Williamsburg County became a center of Patriot resistance. Many local men rallied to Francis Marion’s militia, later called the “Swamp Fox” brigade. Though Marion formally organized his command at Witherspoon’s Ferry on the Pee Dee River in present-day Florence County, a large portion of his fighters came from Williamsburg. With their support, Marion waged guerrilla campaigns that struck at British and Loyalist forces, including engagements at Kingstree, Black Mingo, Mount Hope Swamp, and Lower Bridge. These actions disrupted British control and made Williamsburg a key contributor to the Revolutionary struggle in South Carolina.
