York County

York County played a pivotal role in the American Revolution. At Brattonsville, Patriots defeated British Captain Christian Huck on July 12, 1780, in a victory known as Huck’s Defeat, inspired by the warning of an enslaved man named Watt. Just months later, the Battle of Kings Mountain in October 1780 marked a turning point in the war. York County also supplied the Patriot cause through Hill’s Ironworks, the South’s largest backcountry foundry, destroyed by the British in 1780.
