Make Your Own Huswif Sewing Kit

June 24 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
$25

On Wednesday, June 24 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. join us for an enjoyable session of stitching while making a sewing accessory you will treasure for years to come. A “housewife”, “huswif” or “hussif” is a traditional sewing kit made of fabric that was used by soldiers, sailors, and homemakers to carry mending supplies. Huswifs became very popular in the 1700s and were used commonly up until the 1940s.

Instead of using those cheap plastic sewing kits from a dollar store that you can never close correctly or fit everything back into, you can sew a personalized huswif for yourself or a friend.

Participants will be using historically accurate materials and sewing techniques. You will need to have some basic hand sewing skills to participate in this workshop, but you don’t have to be an expert. You will be provided with all of the materials needed to complete the pocket. However, feel free to bring your own fabric or sewing supplies.

This class will be held in the Meeting House at Andrew Jackson State Park. Bring a beverage or refillable water bottle and a lunch or snack. We have a refrigerator and a microwave in the Meeting House.

Preregistration is required. Please register by Tuesday, June 23. Please call the park or visit this website Event Registration | South Carolina State Parks– to register. This class costs $25.
