SUMMARY:Conversations of Freedom Speaker Series: Partisan Warfare in the South Carolina Backcountry\, 1775-1783.
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Conversations of Freedom Speaker Series\, Dr. John Navin\, examines the brutal civil war that defined the South Carolina backcountry during the American Revolution. Moving beyond coastal narratives\, Dr. Navin explores the intense partisan conflict between local Patriots and Loyalists that transformed the Upcountry into a decisive theater of war. Attendees will discover how the region’s unique social tensions and frontier warfare shaped the struggle for independence\, offering a critical look at the “roots of the revolution” in South Carolina. \nDr. John J. Navin has been teaching American history at Coastal Carolina University since 1999.  He earned his Doctorate at Brandeis University and his Master’s degree at Boston College.   Dr. Navin has an unfortunate fascination with nefarious behavior and terrible events\, of which there are plenty.  In 2020\, his book\, The Grim Years: Settling South Carolina\, 1670-1720\, was published by USC Press.
