Francis Marion Papers
The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission presents The Francis Marion Papers, a preserved and expanding digital collection documenting General Francis Marion’s life, correspondence, and Revolutionary War leadership. Developed over two decades, the project provides scholars and the public with transcribed documents, maps, annotations, and ongoing updates that illuminate Marion’s legacy.
Volume I
Volume I of the Francis Marion Papers covers the period 1759-1780. Included are Marion’s writings from his earliest military action against the Cherokee through his service in the Continental Army early in the Revolutionary War—the first six months of his partisan activity against the British.
Volume II
Volume II of the Francis Marion Papers covers 1781, the most intense period of Marion’s partisan career. From operations against British-occupied Georgetown in early 1781 through the Battle of Eutaw Springs (September)—and subsequent operations around Charlestown—this entire year was taken up with active campaigns.
Volume III
Volume III of the Francis Marion Papers includes documents relating to the end of Marion’s military career (1782), his political work in establishing the new State of South Carolina, and personal papers concerning his later years, including his marriage and his death (1795).
