Mccormick County

McCormick County, once part of South Carolina’s Old Ninety Six District, played a critical role in the Revolution. Fort Charlotte, built by the British in 1766 and captured by Patriots without resistance on July 12, 1780, marks the first overt land military action in the state. The fort, later submerged under Clarks Hill Lake, was salvaged in 1952. Today, its legacy is kept alive through the MC250 initiative, the Willington History Center, and a network of 17 historic markers and sites across the county.
