The Long Cane settlers moved west, which the Cherokee considered a territorial violation. Warned of an attack, without a new fort, the settlers departed. One group was ambushed here, February 1, 1760.

Long Cane settlers returned in the fall of 1760 following the Long Cane massacre. Protected by Chickasaw, they built this palisade surrounded blockhouse, which also served as a Revolutionary War refuge.
