Overlooks the first military land action of the Revolutionary War in South Carolina and perhaps the South. The stone fortress was the last built during the colonial era. Captured by Patriots, July 12, 1775.

Marker leading to the memorial site, describing the fort’s surrender. Some of the ordnance was taken to Ninety-Six, whereupon a November 1775 attack there resulted in the first South Carolinian casualties.

The 1765 settlement included Fort Bonne. Among the inhabitants was Lt. Jean Louis du Mesnil de St. Pierre, 2nd in command at Fort Charlotte during its surrender. He later joined the Patriots.
