April 17, 2024 (Columbia, S.C.) - The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) proudly announces the appointment of retired Gen. William Grimsley as its new chairman.
Grimsley's distinguished military career includes command and leadership positions at every level from platoon through corps, both stateside and overseas. Throughout his service, he garnered numerous awards and decorations, including the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. After retiring from active duty, Grimsley proceeded into private sector work, including consulting for major multinational corporations and leading the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation as its president and CEO. Notably, he served as the state’s inaugural Secretary of Veterans’ Affairs, demonstrating his dedication to advocating for veterans' rights and services.
“With an illustrious military career spanning over three decades, Chairman Grimsley brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to service to this role,” said SC250 Executive Director Molly Fortune. “His track record of excellence and community service makes him an ideal choice to lead SC250 as it continues the legacy established by the late Charles Baxley in commemorating South Carolina's vital role in the American Revolution.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Grimsley is an Eagle Scout, a certified South Carolina Low Country Master Naturalist, and a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian service award.
Grimsley expressed his enthusiasm for his new post, stating, "I am humbled by this appointment, and excited for our collective future in this important endeavor for our state and all of its citizens today and into the future. South Carolina played a crucial role in the founding of our nation, and I am committed to ensuring that SC250 fulfills its mission of honoring our state's rich Revolutionary-era history."
Grimsley’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for SC250’s statewide efforts. On April 9, the Commission announced the confirmation of its 46th county-level committee in Marion County. The addition of Marion County signifies that each county in South Carolina has a committee to help residents rediscover the Revolution in their communities.
Established by the state General Assembly, SC250 is dedicated to commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary era and showcasing South Carolina's significant contributions to securing America’s independence. The commission's mission is to celebrate and promote South Carolina’s pivotal role in the American Revolution through heritage tourism, rural economic growth initiatives and educational programs.
