State American Revolution Trust launches, announces inaugural gift

The South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) will observe key 250th anniversary milestones in our state’s Revolutionary War history through 2033.

Moving beyond 2033, a newly established organization will advance the cause championed by SC250 in perpetuity. The South Carolina American Revolution Trust (SCART) will continue to promote the importance of South Carolina’s patriots and their role in securing America’s independence.

Charles Baxley, chairman of the SC250 Commission and curator of the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution online journal, saw an immediate need to preserve the state’s Revolutionary War artifacts. He mobilized a group of unbiased historians to identify Revolutionary War collections that could be lost due to natural causes and tell all facets of South Carolina’s critical stories.

As an official launching point, Baxley offered his personal collections as the first gifts to the Trust. These collections include books, maps, and pamphlets covering the American Revolutionary War and focusing on the Southern Campaigns.

Other collections are in the process of being identified while preliminary organizational steps are underway to establish SCART’s charitable organization. These collections will take the form of digital or physical libraries.
